Come join the hardy members of WAS on a trip up north for winter specialties on January 20-21, 2018. We'll be venturing around the eastern counties of Michigan's Upper Peninsula looking for Snow Buntings, Sharp-tailed Grouse, Northern Shrikes, Snowy Owls, and other raptors in the open lands as well as Bohemian Waxwings, Pine and Evening Grosbeaks, and Redpolls in the trees. We'll sort through gulls on the St. Mary's River for Iceland, Glaucous, and Black-backed Gulls and then give our necks a break while we scan for waterfowl such as mergansers and Long-tailed Ducks. If there's time and energy, we might also make a dash to Hulbert Bog for Gray Jays and possibly Crossbills. While no bird is guaranteed (except ravens and chickadees), we're sure to see some special species and best of all... we'll be in good company.

If you must be told, this trip probably isn't for you, but dress very warmly and wear proper footwear for walking through snow. Remember, there's no such thing as bad weather... just bad preparation and gear. So bundle up, grab your binoculars/scopes/cameras, and join us as we embrace the hardships and beauty of northern Michigan's winter birds.

We'll depart from the Park-n-Ride lot at Plymouth Road and US 23 in Ann Arbor dark and very early Saturday morning, spend the night near Sault Ste. Marie, and return Sunday afternoon after we lose feeling in our extremities and have picked up as many lifers as we reasonably can. For those of you who like your sleep, there may also be a group that travels on Friday to avoid the early morning Saturday departure. More details to come regarding car pooling, hotels, and meeting times. Contact trip leaders, Taylor Myatt and Bryn Martin, with any questions. People need to book lodging on their own. There are a few options up there, but they may potentially book up. Hope you can join us!
